In today’s hectic world where mornings are rushed, afternoons are full of tasks, and evenings run late a boost of energy is essential. While there are many ways to refresh during the day, a hot cup of coffee has been the go-to energizer for centuries. Arguably, the rush of caffeine provided by coffee is the main reason coffee is consumed by so many. The way we consume coffee has changed drastically over the years from the boiling of leaves for medicinal purposes to expensive brewing machines such as the Keurig. In fact, not only does instant coffee have a long history dating back to 1771, it also has a complex production process and an interesting effect on society. Where regular coffee production ends, instant coffee production begins. The process starts with extraction where aromas and flavors are drawn out; followed by concentration where the liquid coffee is condensed and separated from excess water; and finally the last step of the process is dehydration, where the concentrated liquid coffee is freeze dried solid and then broken into small granules. The effects of instant coffee on society are far reaching from housewives to the military.
